Periods (also known as your period) is the monthly shedding of blood and tissue from the uterus. The menstrual cycle occurs when one set of eggs (ovum) are released to be fertilized by sperm, allowing pregnancy to happen. Before birth, the ovarielike organs on either side of your womb called ovaries that contain immature eggs develop into a follicle, which will grow larger as time goes on and give rise to an egg each month. With the help of hormones, this growth takes place in the form of an actual sac which contains fluid inside it. As a woman gets older rather than having more children or bearing a litter every single month her body changes and reduces this fertility rate. Periods occur once per month for women who have reproductive organs rather than ovaries but have not yet given birth.

Minimum age: 9 lunar years.  But menses can occur before puberty. Bleeding less than 16 days before 9 years of age is considered menstruation. The shortest period of menstruation is 1 day, usually 7 days and maximum 15 days
